Christmas Tennis at OVSC

Hot on the heels of the Ladies Christmas Drive on Friday 1st December, we had a brilliant Christmas party on Saturday evening. Thanks to Jeff, Moire and their boys for laying on a great buffet,  and to Pat, Denis and Nik for driving it forward, and we must mention Karen Budd for bringing a party of 14! Finally, thanks to Kim Joseph, who  provided the music and equipment to get us up and dancing.

Enough of us recovered from the excesses to play in the Christmas Drive the next day. Good tennis, interesting costumes, and a Christmas dinner laid on by Jeff, Moire and their boys (who probably hadn’t had much sleep after clearing up after the previous night’s party). Well done to them. Attached picture of a representative group of players and diners – Graham Woods, Bob Mappley, Angela Woods and Graeme Crowder (with close friend). Karen Budd won for the ladies, and Bob Mappley won (again) for the men.

Monthly Tennis Drive

Members enjoyed a beautiful morning’s tennis followed by an equally beautiful barbeque!

The first Sunday in the month brings together a group of members of varying ability to play some fun, social tennis and follow it up with a very pleasant afternoon, firing up the old barbie and chatting with friends, old and new.  If you would like to join the fun, contact Anne or Bob Mappley at mappleybrown@yahoo.co.uk.

The next drive is on Sunday 5th July, starting at 10am.

Wallis Cup Tennis Final

The Tennis Winter Wallis Cup final was played last Sunday (16th). Well over 100 matches were played since last October, leading to the final between Nicky Lemon/Larry Streeter and Angela Ashford-Woods/Graham Woods.

The winners were Nicky and Larry with 15 games to 9 after taking the handicap into consideration. Nicky and Larry have now won the Wallis Cup 3 times.

The runners-up, Angela and Graham, won the Plate for most matches played – 14 – they have won this plate for 5 consecutive years.

Sarah Eisner umpired the final and several members donated cakes, which were ably served with tea and coffee by Frank’s wife Anne.

Oxshott Tennis links to the Davis Cup Team

Congratulations to the GB Davis Cup team for their great success in beating the USA in the world group. There was some amazing tennis and a crowd whose support must have been worth a few games at least for our team. Next up is France, just after Wimbledon fortnight.

We have a couple of links to the team; apart from Andy living in Oxshott, our own Roger Dalton, stringer par excellence and a useful tennis player himself, is part of the team. Here’s a picture of him next to James Ward congratulating Andy on his triumph over John Isner on Sunday.
