U16 Girls Tennis Success!

Two Oxshott U16 girls, Christina Georgiou (on the left) and Annie Phillips, have won their tennis semi-final matches in the Surrey County Winter Junior Singles Competition, so will be facing each other in the final on Saturday 22nd March at St. Georges College in Weybridge.

Congratulations to both girls for reaching the final. We’ll let you know the outcome, but we have a sneaky feeling that someone from Oxshott might win the competition.

Oxshott Squash Success!

Congratulations to Oxshott players Patrick Fleming and Andy Normile who both won titles at the Surrey Squash Championships held this weekend at St Georges.

Patrick came through a tough 5 set match to win against Geoff Howes (Colets) and Andy beat Marc Aldridge (Purley) to win his age group to complete a successful weekend for Oxshott.

Clubhouse Multimedia

Thanks to a small group of Tennis members, we now have a fantastic new multimedia setup in the clubhouse, replacing the ageing projector and screen. Frank Wallis, Göran Hansson, Mike Mockford, Bob Mappley and John Chapman donated the funds to buy two 50inch LCD TVs, together with soundbars, mounting brackets, cabling and control system. The system can also be used for presentations and showing younger members a film if their sport is interrupted by bad weather.

New Squash Court at Oxshott Village Sports Club

Patrick Fleming from Surrey Squash and Oxshott presented a plaque to Rob Butler, Oxshott Squash Chairman, naming the court ‘Robert Butler Court’. The opening was sponsored by Savills Cobham & Esher. An exciting exhibition match was played by Joe Lee and Robbie Temple in front of an audience of about 60, so the court has been well and truly christened!

Bowls Autumn 2014 Report

During the month of August we acted as hosts for the following events:

Surrey County Ladies Bowlers played a zone match – 2 of our bowlers played in this match.

The North West Surrey Finals was held on August Bank Holiday Sunday, where clubs from the NWS area bowled in the Finals of ladies and men’s competitions held throughout the bowling season. Congratulations to Mary Green and Lorna Kilpatrick for winning the Ladies Pairs.

The Surrey Benevolent 2 Woods was also held and many visitors arrived on that day.

From all 3 events, the Bowls Club received many compliments on the surrounding in which our bowls green is situated and gratitude for our hospitality on all days.

Our bowls green is becoming known as a very special venue at which bowling organisations could hold their events.

Our Club Finals Days were held over the weekend of 30 and 31 August. The weather was kind to us and all competitions were completed without any problems. The Ladies Champion this year is Mary Green and the Men’s Champion is John Wilkins. Congratulations to these two bowlers and to all the winners and runners up of all competitions.

On Thursday 11 September we entertained the Oxshott Cubs. 35 cubs arrived with Akela and a few Dads and by 6.45pm, with the help of many of our bowlers, they were all bowling – some of them taking to bowling like ducks to water. It was a fun evening for all and really great to see the enthusiasm of these youngsters.

Our bowls season finished on Saturday 27 September, so we put the green to bed on Friday 26 September by holding a Candelit Drive. Night lights in jam jars made the green look like runways at the Airport; the idea being that everybody bowled without knocking over the lights. Impossible really, but a good fun evening with which to finish off the Season.

Thank you to all at OVSC for their assistance and advice during our Bowling Season.

Lady Captain

Oxshott Stoolball Victory!

Oxshott Stoolball have just won their first ever trophy – the Plate Final of the Surrey League! This was last won in 2003 when the section was called Effingham. We played Alfold, who finished 2nd in the League, at Alfold and were not expected to win. They scored 135 from 12 overs which is a high score. Mandy and Sue put us in a good position before Mandy was caught. Hannah Taylor then went in and scored the winning run on the second ball of the last over. Sue de la Hoyde scored an unbeaten 71! Well done everyone!
