Name that Team?
32 tennis members took part in the Davis Cup event on Saturday; 8 teams battled it out on a glorious sunny February day. Well done to Italy (they may not be doing so well in the rugby 6 nations!) who won on the day.
Team members Sue Whitear, Vikki Arkinstall, Jeremy Newman and tennis Chairman Rod Stevens beat off other rivals including Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales as well as France, Japan and Tanzania!
Thank you to Michael Dolman, club coach, who did a tremendous job in organising everyone.
The latest tennis event took place at Wednesday club night last night. FAST 4 Tennis which is first to 4 games, tie break at 3 all and 5 point tie break, saw Nigel Pimm winning the bottle of wine. Dave Lusher and Peter Trinder both came runners up. Although the weather may have put a few people off there were enough members playing to see a lively, fun and competitive evening of tennis and drinks in the bar afterwards. Thanks to Alex Jackson for organising!

County Colours for Sue Whitear
We were delighted to learn that Sue Whitear, long time club member, was awarded her Surrey County colours at the recent Surrey Tennis AGM. Keith Glass, President of the Surrey LTA presented Sue with her colours. During her time playing tennis Sue has played at Westside for 20 years and also in Spain at Lew Hoad’s tennis centre; she was also a member of the 45 Club and the AVLTA run by June Pearce. Sue, along with her late husband Mike, were always involved in tennis and knew many people and made many friends through playing tennis both here and in Spain.
Sue was invited to play for Surrey Over 70 to begin with and now plays for the Over 75s team, reaching the final in 2017, where the team played at the Finals in Dudley where they won by one game! In 2018 Surrey beat Lincoln away to reach the final where they again won.
Surrey are extremely successful at county level, winning in many of the age groups and it is very competitive to get into the teams, so well done Sue and we look forward to hearing of more success during 2019!
Early on Saturday mornings a group of keen tennis players meet and play at the club throughout the year. Until recently the group was organised by 93 year old Robert. However he has now passed this over to Colin Campbell, although Robert still joins in with the tennis.
They recently enjoyed a wonderful Christmas Breakfast in the clubhouse after their morning of tennis.
20 tennis players enjoyed battling it out in a Davis Cup Themed Tennis Tournament held at OVSC recently. 5 teams battled it out with eventual winners Team Australia narrowly beating Team Great Britain by 4 points. This was despite Team Australia being the only team with 2 ladies playing in it!!
Team Australia consisted of Claire Macintosh, Fiona Stephen, Graeme Crowder and Jonathan Fourie and can be seen pictured holding the Davis Cup trophy – and their prizes.
The tournament will be run twice a year – summer and winter.
